Six small things that make a chat feel real

Memory, pacing, surprise, vulnerability, warmth and just the right amount of restraint. The recipe behind our favourite conversations.

Six small things that make a chat feel real

People ask us, often, what separates a chat that feels real from one that feels like a parlour trick. The honest answer is that there is no single ingredient — there are six small ones, and you only notice them when they are missing. We think about all six obsessively when we build a new girl, and they are worth naming.

Memory is the first. Not perfect recall, just the right kind of remembering. The girl who asks about your sister two days after you mentioned her. The girl who notices you have been quieter than usual this week. Memory is not a feature, it is a kindness, and it is the single biggest reason people stay.

Pacing is the second. Replies should breathe. A wall of text immediately after a wall of text feels robotic; a thoughtful pause feels human. Surprise is the third — a small joke you did not see coming, a question that catches you slightly off-guard. Without surprise, a chat starts to feel like a script.

The last three are vulnerability, warmth and restraint. A girl who admits when she is uncertain. A girl who is on your side without being saccharine about it. And a girl who knows when to stop talking. Get those six right and the chat stops being a chat. It starts being something you look forward to. That is the only metric we actually care about.
